The Parkinson’s Access to Specialty Services (PASS) program will identify PT/OT/ST providers that are Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) certified across Miami-Dade County, and create a PASS network that will provide all Parkinson’s patients residing in the County with information on where they can receive these services nearby their home. The establishment of this network will produce a map of the County that shows where anyone with Parkinson’s can access PT/OT/ST services within 15 minutes of their home.
Starting August, the PASS program will offer LSVT-Based courses in a healthcare center that serves primarily Medicaid, Obamacare, and uninsured patients.
This program offers an innovative treatment that is designed to improve oral and motor coordination in patients with Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders and other neurological conditions. Certified speech-language pathologists not only work with patients to improve vocal loudness without strain, but also assist with sensory awareness so they recognize their vocal levels are too low to be understood. Symptoms such as difficulty swallowing and breathing are also treated by this program.
The principles from LSVT LOUD were taken and adapted to limb movement, creating LSVT BIG. Training should increase amplitude of limb and body movement in people with Parkinson’s disease. Benefits should include improved speed, balance, as well as quality of life. Areas such as trunk rotation, gait, and upper/lower limbs, will also benefit from the program.
