Various life style changes, such as diet and exercise, are also beneficial in treating Multiple Sclerosis. Though no specific diet is recommended, diets low in saturated fats and high in polyunsaturated fats may be beneficial.
Exercise is very important for people who have Multiple Sclerosis. Exercise helps keep the heart and muscles healthy. Exercise can help a person become stronger, have better balance, improve their mood, and much more. Exercises such as yoga, tai chi, and aqua therapy (swimming) are encouraged and have shown benefits with managing muscle spasms. When exercising, it is important to have plenty of water, rest often, and keep as cool as possible. Swimming in a pool that has cool water, using a fan, and drinking plenty of cold water can be helpful.
Before making any major lifestyle changes, going on a diet, starting an exercise program, or taking vitamins or herbal supplements, please talk to your doctor. Your doctor will help you decide if these changes are right for you and will make sure they do not interfere with other treatment options or medications you are taking.
